Die Suche nach dem besten, exzellentesten Kaffee der Welt ist aufwendig, lohnt sich aber in vielerlei Hinsicht. Seit 1999 macht es sich die Jury des Wettbewerbs „Cup of Excellence“ zur Aufgabe, den besten Kaffee verschiedener Ursprungsländer zu finden und anschließend die höchste Auszeichnung, die ein Kaffee erhalten kann, zu vergeben.
Was ist die “Cup of Excellence”?
Einfach gesagt: die weltweit angesehenste Auszeichnung für Spitzenkaffees. Dabei werden jedes Jahr die besten Kaffees eines Ursprungslandes in einem Wettbewerb gekürt. Die Anforderungen an die Kaffees sind dabei sehr hoch, weshalb nur wenige Kaffees ausgezeichnet werden. Ursprünglich wurde der Wettbewerb ins Leben gerufen, um Kaffees durch die Auszeichnung besonderer Qualität einen höheren Wert zu verleihen.
Wer kann sich für den Wettbewerb anmelden?
Organisiert wird der jährlich stattfindende „Cup of Excellence“ Wettbewerb von der Alliance For Coffee Excellence (ACE) für Kaffeeproduzenten aus den Anbauländern Afrikas, Süd- und Mittelamerikas. Jeder Kaffeebauer des austragenden Landes kann, kostenfrei, Proben von Kaffees zur Bewertung einreichen. Dabei „treten“ bis zu 900 verschiedene Kaffees pro Land „gegeneinander an“.
Wie läuft die Auswahl der Kaffees ab?
Die Kaffees werden in verschiedenen Runden bewertet – nur Kaffees mit kontinuierlich hoher Punktzahl erhalten am Ende eine Auszeichnung.
Zunächst werden die eingereichten Kaffeeproben von einer nationalen Jury, bestehend aus Mitarbeitern von Kaffeeorganisationen, Exporteuren und Q-Gradern, bewertet. Alle Muster mit einem Score von 86 oder mehr, schaffen es in die nächste Runde. Am Ende kommen maximal 40 Muster in die nächste Bewertungsphase weiter.
In der nächsten Phase finden weitere Verkostungen und Blindverkostungen durch eine internationale Jury, bestehend aus einflussreichen Kaffeeröstern, Kaffeekäufern und -verkäufern, statt. Schließlich werden am finalen Tag des Wettbewerbs die besten zehn Kaffees erneut verkostet, um ihnen gebührende Aufmerksamkeit zu verleihen und die finale Bewertung und Platzierung zu bestimmen.

Die Kaffee-Auktion nach dem Wettbewerb findet statt, um die prämierten Kaffees an den Höchstbietenden zu versteigern. Der Kaffeeproduzent/ die Kaffeeproduzentin bekommt so einen in der Regel weit über dem üblichen Marktpreis liegenden Erlös für den Kaffee. Dies ist nicht nur ein Lohn für die viele Arbeit, die der Gewinner in den Kaffee steckt, sondern gleichzeitig ein Anreiz, auch zukünftig den Fokus auf Qualität zu setzen.
Doch nicht nur der Kaffee, der am Ende der Cup of Excellence Gewinner ist, zieht die Aufmerksamkeit auf sich. Die Auszeichnung ist in der Regel ein gesamtheitlicher Mehrwert für den Produzenten und seine Farm und bringt ihm viel Aufmerksamkeit und zukünftige, gute Geschäfte.

What is “Cup of Excellence”?
Simply put: the world's most prestigious award for top specialties coffees. Every year, the best coffees from a country of origin are chosen in a competition. The requirements on the coffees are very high, which is why only a few coffees are awarded. The competition was originally founded to give coffees a higher value by awarding those of extremely great quality.
Who can register for the competition?
The annual “Cup of Excellence” competition is organised by the Alliance For Coffee Excellence (ACE) for coffee producers from the growing countries of Africa, South and Central America. Every coffee farmer in the host country can submit a sample of their coffee for evaluation – free of charge. Up to 900 different coffees per country “compete” against each other.
How does the selection of coffees work?
The coffees are evaluated in different rounds – only coffees with consistently high points receive an award at the end.
First, the submitted coffee samples are assessed by a national jury consisting of employees from coffee organisations, exporters, and Q-Graders. All patterns with a score of 86 or more make it to the next round. In the end, a maximum of 40 samples will get to the next evaluation phase.
In the next phase, further tastings and blind tastings will take place by an international jury consisting of influential coffee roasters, coffee buyers and sellers. Finally, on the final day of the competition, the ten best coffees will be cupped again, to give them attention and to determine the final score and rating.

In this way, the coffee producer receives proceeds for the coffee that are usually well above the usual market price.
