UPDATE COFFEE PROJECT WITH THE ASOCIACIÓN CAFÉ DEL FUTURO, PERU

Aktualisiert: 22. Feb. 2022

After we launched our "Proyecto Huertos Familiares Sostenibles" (Sustainable Vegetable Garden Project) together with the Asociación Café del Futuro in September 2021, we are very excited about the progress we have been able to make so far.

So far, each of the 105 coffee-producing families was provided with radish, chili, cabbage, carrot, squash, onion, spinach, beet, lettuce, and cucumber seeds, and also received rakes and fertilizer to plant their individual vegetable gardens. In addition to the materials, training has already taken place on how to set up their gardens, and information material has been handed out to remind them of the most important activities.

The project is planned long-term. Depending on the season, the farmers will receive new seeds throughout the year and will be trained accordingly.

Why do we want to help?

In the past decades, the Jaén region in Peru has become a monoculture of coffee, and local communities now strongly rely on food from other regions.

With the governmental restrictions in place to prevent further COVID-19 contagions, costs for transportation and prices of available goods have increased. Since the pandemic, many families struggle with food security, decreasing livelihood.

Who do we want to help?

This also affected many of the farmers from the Asociación Café del Futuro. The association was founded in 2007 and stands for high-quality coffee with selected varieties and a strong focus on certified coffee. The farmers mainly grow varieties such as Caturra, Bourbon, and Mundo Novo, which flourish well in the region between the provinces of Jaén and San Ignacio.

We have a close partnership with the Asociación Café del Futuro which we visited in 2019 and have been sourcing coffees from them ever since.

How do we want to help?

With your support, we will build a sustainable solution that improves the livelihood and food sovereignty of 105 coffee-producing families.

With the purchase of one of the three qualities from the Asociación Café del Futuro, you support the implementation of home vegetable gardens in order to both increase food security and promote diversified agricultural practices. Each coffee producing family will receive 10 raised beds of 7.5 square meters as well as seeds of the 10 most sown vegetables in the area and tools and know-how.

Which coffees are involved?

Our project coffees are the following three qualities from the Asociación Café del Futuro:
