NYABARONGO | ROBUSTA | FULLY WASHED
This washed Robusta was processed at Kiyumba Washing Station in Muhanga district. The District of Muhanga is part of the southern province of Rwanda and offers ideal growing conditions for coffee with a subtropical climate and mountainous landscape.
Founded in 2008, Kiyumba Washing Station is part of Impexcor, a family owned coffee producer. Smallholder farmers have joined together in cooperatives, which Impexcor helped to build up and supports with loans, fertilizers, seedlings and social engagement such as schools, health insurance, etc. During our trip to Rwanda, we met with one of the brothers of Impexcor, Ernest Mwumvaneza. He distributes seedlings and has made great efforts to educate people in coffee. In 2018, 100.000 plants were given out to farmers.
The Muhanga district is a good region for the cultivation of Robusta, which is harvested in June. The station remains open until the Robusta cherries are ripe. The farmers are grateful, since they have had difficulties in finding washing stations to process their cherries after the Arabica harvest and have felt excluded in the past.
