The district of Chikmagalur is part of the Baba Budan Giri region, which is considered the origin of Indian coffee. The first coffee seeds arrived in 1600 when Baba Budan smuggled them out of Yemen on his pilgrimage to Mecca. Coffee from this region is mostly produced by small farmers.
