EUDR
WHAT IS EUDR?
The regulation aims to prevent the import and sale of products that contribute to deforestation on the EU market. This includes products like soy, palm oil, timber, cattle, coffee, cocoa, and rubber. Companies wishing to import and sell such products in the EU must prove that they are not linked to deforestation after the cut-off date of December 31, 2020. Products must be "deforestation-free." In addition to protecting forests, the regulation also emphasizes protecting indigenous communities and other human rights that could be threatened by deforestation.
WHAT FOR?
Deforestation and forest degradation are among the main causes of climate change and biodiversity loss – the two biggest global environmental crises of our time.
WHEN?
The regulation will come into effect on December 30, 2024, and on June 30, 2025, for micro and small businesses.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT ROLES?
We, as Touton Specialties:
Companies that are not SMEs and wish to import the listed raw materials into the EU must fulfill the following obligations:
-
Collect geolocation data of the land where the coffee was produced (polygon or GPS point) for each individual lot brought to market.
-
Conduct a risk assessment that includes legality checks and the protection of indigenous populations.
-
Implement mitigation measures to ensure that all identified risks are reduced to a negligible level.
Roasters and Retailers:
After companies have submitted their due diligence statements in the EU Information System (IS), market participants further down the supply chain (including roasters) will be provided with reference numbers for each lot, which refer to the due diligence conducted. However, they are required to verify that due diligence has been carried out, and they remain legally responsible in the event of a breach of the regulation.
